This Holiday Season?

How Will You #LightTheWorld

How Will You #LightTheWorld? The holiday season is here. It’s time for trimming the tree, shopping for gifts, and hosting or attending a holiday party with family and friends. Let’s not forget the reason for the season. During Christmas, we are reminded that Jesus Christ is the light of the world. This year we can share that light, by resolving to do the things that Jesus did. How will you #LightTheWorld this holiday season?

A Girl Rocks Life has partnered with to bring you this post. All opinions expressed are my own.

Starting on the Worldwide Day of Service on December 1st, and every day leading up to Christmas, will focus on a different Christ-like behavior in the #LightTheWorld in 25 Ways, Over 25 Days. They will highlight ways we can emulate his example. Jesus did many things to help an individual. It takes just one person’s act of kindness to make a difference in someone’s life.  I’m choosing to share my #LightTheWorld act of kindness that I did earlier this year.

#LightTheWorld Day 7

Jesus Fed the Hungry and So Can You

Earlier this year, I was really busy with work and life, in general, was very hectic. I rarely had a moment to myself, let alone get on social media unless it was for work. I did not have time to check my personal Facebook news feed. After weeks, if not a month of not checking the updates on my news feed, I finally had a moment and checked my feed. Since Facebook has changed up their algorithms, I rarely see posts from actual family and friends. But on this particular day, I was seeing updates from old friends.

As I’m scrolling through my feed, a post caught my eye. It wasn’t a video or a picture of a cute family moment. It was a simple update of what someone was eating. We see posts like this all the time. A picture of a meal that someone ordered from their favorite restaurant, a favorite recipe we cooked for our family, or just asking for suggestions on what to cook for dinner.

This post simply stated,

“ok, you know you’re broke and out of food when you eat salmon rice and mac & cheese for dinner, but hey I’m eating lol.”

I read that post a few times and clicked to read the comments. Some were snarky remarks, and others were sympathetic, but no one really offered help. Unfortunately, I couldn’t do anything at the moment; I had to get back to work, until next time, when I get a moment to check social media. Throughout the day, that post kept popping into my head. That night I was talking to my husband about the day. I mentioned the post that had been popping into my head all day.

Jesus Fed the Hungry and So Am I

He smiled and said, “it’s bothering you because we have been there, and you don’t want to see anyone go without the most basic of needs, like food. You know what you need to do, we are ok at the moment financially, so do what needs to be done.” I got on Facebook and commented on the post that had been bothering me all day. I simply commented for her to check her private messages.

She messaged me back that she had been downsized from her company, and was trying to make ends meet until her last check arrived in 5 days. Until then she didn’t know what to do with empty cupboards. I wanted to help in any way I could, but I live a few hours away from where I grew up, and she still lived. We agreed to meet up at a Walmart half way between where the two of us live.

I purchased more than a week’s worth of groceries for her and her daughter. I spent more money on her than I spend on my weekly grocery bill, feeding a family of four. I wanted to make sure that there was enough food to last a while, just-in-case the money she had been waiting on did not come when she expected it to. As we walked the aisles of the grocery store, we caught up on the past 20 years since we last saw each other.

I Will #LightTheWorld, Will You?

You’re probably thinking why would you help someone who you have not seen in 20 years. I may not have had day-to-day contact with this person, but I did see what was happening in her life through social media and our mutual friends. It does not matter if you are a friend or a stranger, if I have the means to help someone, I will. After grocery shopping, I had given her gas money to make the trip home. She wanted to pay me back when she could in the next few weeks. I told her to Pay It Forward when she could.

Find Your Own Way to Serve

My point is it doesn’t take much to help someone. It takes one simple act of kindness to make a difference in someone’s life. Whether we realize it at the time or not. Jesus fed others and so can you. You don’t have to go as drastic as buying a week’s worth of groceries for someone like I did. There are many other ways you can emulate what Jesus did.

  • Donate non-perishable items to your local food bank.
  • Volunteer to serve a meal at your local homeless shelter.
  • Do you know someone on a tight budget? Perhaps an elderly relative, a friend, or a neighbor. Invite them over for dinner.
  • Donate gently used clothes to a charity or thrift store.
  • Collect toiletry items and winter items for the local homeless shelter.
  • Teach a child something that your grandparents taught you.
  • Point out a virtue in someone who they don’t see themselves.

How YOU Can Help Plant a Tree and

#GIFtATree this Holiday Season

Whether you live in the city or out in the country everyone can appreciate the beauty of a tree. We love to watch them bloom in the spring, shade us in the summer, watch the leaves change beautiful shades of red, yellow, and orange in the fall and watch them stand tall and dormant in the winter waiting to start the process over again. How you can help plant a tree and #GIFtATree to the environment.

Trees help us in so many ways,

Why not help plant more?

Your probably thinking how does a tree help me?
What do I have to do to “HELP” Plant a Tree?

6 Ways that Trees Help Us and the Environment

  • Trees help clean our air Global Forests removed about one-third of fossil fuel emissions annually from 1990 to 2007. Trees remove pollution in the air contributing to better air quality and improved health.
  • Trees provide us with oxygen One large tree provides a days supply of oxygen for up to four people. The Amazon Rainforest produces more than 20% of the world’s oxygen.
  • Trees help reduce the effect of Climate change They absorb carbon dioxide (CO²), They absorb and remove the carbon, and release oxygen back into the air.
  • Trees help us save energy  Planting trees around your home for shade or as a wind break can save you money. They can reduce a homes heating and cooling cost by 20-50%.
  • Trees provide shade which lowers the air and surface temperature. Making it more tolerable on those hot humid days. They are nice to sit under to avoid the summer sun.
  • Trees benefit the wildlife by giving them homes and space to roam in forests.

They give us places to hike, camp, hunt, and discover the woods and forests. Personally, a walk in the woods is a form of meditation for me. Watching the wildlife in their natural habitat, surrounded by trees, is enjoyable.
